Virtual Sit-down with Milly K
One fat boy to another fat boy, this is one of those interviews i wish i held over video call, we'd have truly had a swell time admiring our beautiful, big and round endowments (portruding stomach 🤣)
First time I came across the name Milly K, it was off a Critic Circle Publication back in school, Milly had just performed at a show the previous day, and the writer of that publication had glowing things to say about him. Being a curious cat myself I went on to search for his music, listened, had a couple of random sightings of the artist and somewhat became a closeted fan.
2020 Milly K teases a project, Shinzu is heartbroken, broke and observing the Nationwide lockdown and sort of convinces himself he's cut out to be a writer. A couple published articles after, random breaks in between, Shinzu finds Milly k in a group chat they've both been added to, one thing leads to another and they settle for an interview.
The Meet
My name is Eguvwese Nicholas aka Milly K. I'm an Afrobeats/hip hop artist but I like to call my version of Afrobeats "Afro-jolly". This is because my style of music is one that gets you in your dancing shoes and just gives you that vibe, you know jolly, jollification.. he explains.
I nod in affirmation, despite being one who has failed to subscribe to the idea of artists creating and naming their genres, this is one creation I accept, because honestly when I do listen to Milly k songs, I definitely feel that Jolly vibe. Moving forward I notice from our discussions that I couldn't place how the name Milly K came off Eguvwese Nicholas, which is normally the norm, so I ask
Looking at your government name, Eguvwese Nicholas and your stage name Milly K, I can't see a semblance or a correlation, can you share with us how you came about the name Milly K.
I was on my way home from school and was trying to come up with a stage name for myself, I was trying to carve something off the name Meek Mill, and eventually, I settled for Milly K.
Why Meek Mill, was he sort of an inspiration to you or did his music influence you in any way.
No, I didn't... Meek mill didn't influence me but I just like the name, I watch a lot of MTV base, sound city and the rest, so when I first came across the name there, I liked it and it ended up playing a part when I wanted to come up with a name for myself.
Digging deeper into how the music started for him
Milly K narrates a story about him being a backbencher in secondary school, and like every back bencher, he was in a gang of three or four. One day a friend comes in and suggest that they all make music together as a group and that led to the formation of a Three-man music group called Melo boys.
Vibes on vibes
On why he thought to put out a project
Milly says he felt the need to give his listeners a uniform idea of what his music is about, he's always felt like his previous releases didn't do enough justice to that, so the project seemed like the right way to go about fixing that.
Corona Virus
Milly shares with me that while working on this project, he got infected with the Coronavirus, and that explains why he went quiet on social media for a while, isolating and recuperating. He does mention that he recorded the song Sextape off his extended play during this period which has since gone on to be a fan favourite since release day.
Bromance with Harry Carter
Harry Carter is somebody that understands me perfectly like we understand each other, complement each other, share our plights, our bond is deeper than just music.
Milly mentions he met Harry in 2016 at an audition, but before then they were both aware of each other. He further explains that their bond became stronger when they both started working with now popular IG comedian Sydney Talker.
Have you always been a Rapper and a Singer, or singing is something you started doing because of the requirements/pressure from the industry
Actually, I was a singer before a rapper, trying to make a name for myself in the university of Benin is how I started rapping, I figured if I participated in rap battles and came out on top, I'd definitely be popular, so I had to sharpen my bars and then I started working with Sydney and it got more intense because I had to do rap freestyles on Instagram and I knew the content just had to be really good
In closing, I ask Milly K what his aims are with the release of his new project and I get a shocker for a reply...
A seemingly frustrated Milly K says he's done wondering and complaining about numbers “music now is just cruise for me”
Honestly, I've not said this to anyone before, not media houses, not my fans but the music has done enough harm to me, music has been draining, music now is just cruise for me, I've lost the ability to bother if people are listening or not, if it reaches Davido or WizKid or e dey for my room only me stream am, I'm just putting it out and hope that if you care you'll listen.
I can leave music at anytime, I can leave music tomorrow, if I see something that'll give me better pay, I'll leave music, I'm doing this music for the love I have for the craft, but as a career, it's not encouraging enough...
Loveeee❤️
Top interview, hopefully with Master OG A-Q with Africori, they can give Artiste hope and exposure! Nice one Shinzu & Milky K
